Where wallpapering goes wrong

A poor hanging job rarely announces itself with a single obvious mistake — it's a pattern that drifts half a centimetre out over four drops, a seam that opens as the paste dries, or a run that looked fine on the wall and wrong the moment the light hit it side-on. Most of that comes down to a wall that wasn't properly prepared, or a first drop that wasn't hung dead plumb. We measure and mark a true vertical before anything is cut, and we dry-hang the first length against it rather than trusting an eye that's been staring at the same wall for an hour.

Preparing the wall

Old paper is stripped back fully rather than papered over, walls are sized to control absorbency and give the paste something even to grip, and any dents, cracks or uneven patches are filled and sanded flat — wallpaper is far less forgiving of a poor surface than paint, since every imperfection reads through a pattern in a way it doesn't under a flat colour. On older Newcastle terraces with several layers of historic paper, stripping alone can take longer than the hanging that follows; we account for that at the quote stage rather than discovering it once we've started.

Pattern matching, properly

Large-repeat and geometric patterns need careful planning before the first cut — where the pattern centres on the main wall, how it turns a corner, and how much waste to allow for matching across drops. We plan the run across the whole room before starting, so the pattern is centred on the wall you'll actually look at (usually opposite the door) rather than starting arbitrarily at one corner and letting the seams fall where they will. Stairwells, with their long unbroken drops and awkward angles, get the same planning discipline — this is usually where a hurried job shows first.

Papers we work with

We hang paste-the-wall vinyls, traditional paste-the-paper rolls, textured and grasscloth papers, and heavier feature panels, and we're equally happy working with a paper you've already bought as sourcing a recommendation ourselves. Feature walls behind a bed or fireplace are a popular way to bring in a bolder pattern without committing a whole room to it, and we can advise on which walls in a room suit that treatment before you buy a single roll.

Timings and cost

A single feature wall is usually a half-day job once the wall is prepared; a full room with a patterned paper typically takes one to two days depending on the number of chimney breasts, alcoves and awkward corners involved. As with everything else we do, we quote after seeing the room and the paper in question, so the price reflects the actual pattern repeat and wall condition rather than a generic per-roll rate.

"Wallpapering was pattern-matched perfectly, even on the stairwell."
