Colour consultation

An on-site consultation to get the palette right before we open a single tin — because the colour on a chart never quite matches the colour on your wall.

Why the chart lies a little

A colour swatch under shop lighting, held at arm's length, tells you very little about how that same colour will look across a whole wall in your own north-facing bedroom at four in the afternoon. Light temperature, room orientation, existing floor and furniture tones, and even the sheen level of the paint all shift how a colour reads once it's actually on — which is why so many repaints end up "close, but not quite what I pictured." A consultation exists to close that gap before the decision is made, not after the second coat has dried.

How a consultation works

We visit at a time of day that matters to how you use the room — evening for a living room, morning for a bedroom — and look at the space as it actually is: existing floors, fixed furniture, woodwork, and the light it gets through the year, not just on the day of the visit. We talk through what you want the room to feel like, not just which colour you've seen on a shelf somewhere, and bring a working set of large sample boards rather than the pocket-sized chips a paint shop hands over, since scale changes a colour's read considerably.

Whole-house schemes

For a full redecoration, a consultation looks at how colours carry between rooms — hallways, landings and sightlines from one room into the next — so the whole house reads as considered rather than as a series of unrelated decisions made room by room. We're just as comfortable recommending a confident, saturated colour for a small room that suits it as we are steering a client away from a shade that will fight with fixed elements like a Victorian fireplace or existing wood flooring.

Finishes matter as much as colour

The same colour in matt, satin and gloss can look like three different shades depending on how light hits it, and a high-sheen finish will show every roller mark and wall imperfection that a flat matt would hide. Part of the consultation is recommending finish as much as hue — where a wipeable finish is worth the slight extra sheen in a kitchen, or where a soft matt is worth the extra care in a busy hallway.

Booking a consultation

A colour consultation can be booked on its own, or as part of the same visit as an interior painting quote — most clients combine the two, since the colour decision and the quote for doing the work naturally happen at the same stage. There's no separate call-out charge when it's paired with a quote for the work itself.
